From the men who stayed, Charlie did not require a lot of fuss and bother. It was nice, but not required. No heavy romantic declarations or even breakfast the next day. Although considering what they’d shared, he expected at least a morning-after text from Joshua. It damned well felt morning-after-text-worthy. A winking emoticon, at the bare minimum. But other than giving up the usual status reports about the show’s schedule as he gulped the first of what would be many cups of coffee, the cell phone’s silence was deafening. He saw the time on the screen, and the body responded to what the body did every weekday morning: it prepared to be Charlie the producer, on top of everything and in charge of all.

That worked, for a while.

Only cast and crew buzzed his phone when they were live; everyone else got the auto-response. But he always checked in afterward. Still nothing.

Charlie wondered if Joshua had changed his mind and decided to crawl back into the relative safety of denial. Or had something worse happened?

When he caught himself snapping at one of the nicer interns, Charlie decided he needed to do something else with this roiling energy. Stabbing at the tiny keyboard of his phone, he sent a text to the man who worked the front desk at his gym, asking him to reserve a half-court for that evening. Then he sent a message to Xander, warning him that he’d better be on his game.
